Hiring an Operations Manager: What Growing SMEs Should Look For

An operations manager could help, provided the role is built around the problems your business actually needs solved. Before beginning the search, spend time identifying those responsibilities.

Start with the pressure points

Before recruiting, identify where the business is losing time. This may be inconsistent processes, slow customer communication, missed handovers, unclear responsibilities or too much work sitting with the founder.

The right operations manager should be able to bring order to those areas. They may create clearer workflows, improve reporting, coordinate teams or make sure client work moves through the business more smoothly. The exact balance will depend on the company, which is why a generic job description rarely produces the best results.

Look for practical leadership

An operations manager needs the confidence to introduce changes and the judgement to bring colleagues with them. They will have to understand why a process is causing problems, agree a workable improvement and make sure people follow through. Ask how they have handled that in previous roles.

During interviews, ask candidates for examples of how they improved a process, handled competing priorities or helped a team work more effectively. Look for people who can describe what they did, why they did it and what changed as a result.

Set up the role for success

The new hire will need authority, information and access to decision-makers. If they are expected to improve the way the business works but cannot make changes or get timely answers, progress will be slow.

Be clear about the first ninety days. Decide which processes they should review, what outcomes matter and how success will be measured. This gives the person a purposeful start and helps the business see early value from the hire.
